Therapeutic relationship is the key
Since training and qualifying as a counsellor 12 years ago, I have worked in a number of different settings and with both short term and long term clients.
I work with people of all religions, cultures and sexual orientations, adults of all ages, couples, and with men and women. For ten years I worked for a charitable organisation specialising in counselling people who have been affected by childhood sexual abuse. I have also worked for the NHS offering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and short term solution focussed therapy. I trained as a Couple Counsellor with Relate, working with couples and with individuals managing relationship problems.
This broad experience has enabled me to develop a number of different approaches and skills, allowing me to work with the person rather than the issue, to find what helps each individual.
During this time I also worked as the Project coordinator of the Devon Rape and Sexual Abuse Line. I trained with ADVA (Against Domestic Violence & Abuse) in Devon, giving me further skills and knowledge to work with these difficult issues. However I also work with many other areas of difficulty. Some of these, but by no means all, include: stress, abuse, trauma, relationships, depression, anxiety, work related issues, bereavement, sexuality, life changes, lack of confidence, low self esteem food related issues and anger.
In addition I am also an Associate Lecturer with Exeter College, training counsellors to Diploma level and delivering short courses to students. To see details of the courses run there please follow this link www.exe-coll.ac.uk
I now concentrate on working as a counsellor in private practice, where I really enjoy working with clients from all walks of life. I also provide counselling for companies who offer Employee Assistance Programmes (EAP). An EAP is intended to help employees deal with personal problems that might adversely impact their work performance, health and well-being.
